The development of the Uttarakhand State Earthquake Early Warning System was undertaken by IIT Roorkee. It was initially launched in 2014 as a pilot project named the "Earthquake Early Warning System for Northern India", which received sponsorship from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. The project involved installing seismic sensors in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. In 2017, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, Dehradun, Government of Uttarakhand, took over the initiative. Subsequently, the sensor instrumentation was extended to the Kumaun region, and a central recording station is established in the EEWS Laboratory, CoEDMM, IIT Roorkee.
